Succession Development

What is succession development?

Succession development is the process of identifying and developing the inherent talent of high performing individuals who have the potential to fill key leadership positions. It increases the availability of experienced and capable colleagues who are prepared to assume these roles.

In 2014, UVA launched the succession development Cornerstone Program. Cohorts are selected annually and have 30 participants. Participants span the Academic Division, the Health System, and University Physicians Group and are identified in advance by their senior leadership.

The program includes:

  • Customized leadership development, including a 360 assessment and coaching
  • Mentoring from senior leaders
  • Presentation of a pan-University project
  • Visibility among executive leadership

While participation in the program does not guarantee promotion or advancement, it prepares colleagues for possible future leadership roles and offers opportunities for personal development. We are finding tomorrow’s leaders among today’s.
